In May 2008, the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) issued new regulations authorizing Medicaid coverage of custom power wheelchairs for eligible nursing facility residents. The following is a brief description of this benefit and the process that must be followed to obtain Medicaid coverage of this durable medical equipment.

Long-term care can be expensive. The cost depends on the amount and type of care you need and where you receive it. Most long-term care costs are paid by Medicaid, a federal-state assistance program for people who qualify. People with low incomes may already qualify for Medicaid, and those with moderate incomes may be able to "spend down" their assets to qualify.
